The LGBTQ Pride flag is also known as the Rainbow Flag. It is a symbol for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer solidarity.

The flag consists of six colours, and not seven as in a rainbow. the colours portray the diversity in the queer community. They also reflect the spectrum of human sexuality and gender.

The flag was originally designed in 1978, by American artist  Gilbert Barker, who was an openly gay man and a drag queen. The flag made its debut at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade. Before the creation of the flag, pink triangles were used to signify the LGBTQ community.

The flag has undergone several revisions through the years. Barker’s original design had 8 colours, with a specific meaning assigned to each colour.

It was the assassination of Harvey Milk, one of the first gay elected officials in the U.S, in 1978, that dramatically increased the demand for the Pride flags, with queer people all over the world desperate for a symbol of solidarity.

The Pride Flag is banned in several places all over the world, due to it being a symbol for the LGBTQ. Recently, the Pentagon declared that it will not allow Pride flags to fly at military facilities.
