Oppenheimer’s teaser trailer has been released by Universal Pictures. The much-awaited 12th film by British-American writer-director Christopher Nolan will see Cillian Murphy essay the role of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American scientist behind the Manhattan Project who is attributed as the “father of the atomic bomb”.

The teaser trailer was released in theatres along with the Jordan Peele directorial, Nope. Nolan is always known for moving away from the beaten path, and in a similar vein, the teaser trailer can only be watched via a loop on Youtube and Twitter:

In the teaser, a voice is heard elucidating what an atomic bomb is, while another voiceover remarks, “You gave them the power to destroy themselves and made him the most important man who ever lived.”

Alongside Murphy, the film will also star Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Remi Malik, and others. Notably, Blunt, Downey, and Damon, massive stars in their own rights, took pay cuts in order to work with Nolan. The cinematography was handled by long-time Nolan collaborator, Hoyte van Hoytema.

Murphy had earlier spoken of his fondness for Nolan, saying that he will always turn up for the 51-year-old Batman trilogy director. Murphy, a Nolan veteran, was himself a part of the Batman trilogy, and was also seen in Inception and Dunkirk.

News of the film first surfaced in September 2021, with Nolan moving on from his usual distribution house, Warner Brothers, over difference of opinion regarding the postponement of his previous film, Tenet. Regarding Oppenheimer, Universal stated that it “thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.” The film is set for a July 21, 2023 release, when it will clash at the box office with Greta Gerwig’s Margot Robbie-starrer, Barbie.
