The first look image from Christopher Nolan’s forthcoming biography of physicist J Robert Oppenheimer has been released by Universal Pictures. It’s a closeup of the protagonist, played by Cillian Murphy.

The ‘Peaky Blinders‘ actor is depicted wearing a cap and peering into the camera in the monochromatic image published by Universal Pictures’ official Instagram profile, with a cigarette dangling from his mouth. The photograph received a lot of love from fans. “Can’t wait for Nolan’s next masterpiece,” one fan remarked. “Pleased to finally see Cillian in the starring role,” said another.

J Robert Oppenheimer was a theoretical physicist and professor known as the “Father of the Atomic Bomb.” He was the director of the Los Amalos Laboratory, and his contributions to the creation of nuclear weapons were critical. He personally oversaw the first successful atomic bomb test detonation.

The film Oppenheimer, written and directed by Christopher Nolan, is characterised as an “epic thriller that thrusts moviegoers into the pulse-pounding dilemma of the mysterious man who must risk destroying the world in order to rescue it.”

Oppenheimer is set to hit theatres on July 21, 2023. The film is based on Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book ‘American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer’.

Emily Blunt plays the scientist’s wife, biologist and botanist Katherine Oppenheimer, in the film. In addition, Matt Damon plays General Leslie Groves Jr., the Manhattan Project’s director, and Robert Downey Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, a founding member of the US Atomic Energy Commission. Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh round out the high-profile ensemble group.
