‘The Sopranos’ is not likely to have any sequel, for now, despite heightened fan chatter over a Super Bowl commercial, Deadline has reported HBO confirming.

They reported HBO and HBO Max’s Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys saying, “I don’t think David has any interest in doing anything more with The Sopranos. The Sopranos is a terrific and classic show. I don’t think there’s any reason to open that back up. I think maybe the Superbowl ad… was an indication that someone’s going back. As far as I know, I don’t think he has any plans to do that”.

Initially, the rumours of revisiting Tony Soprano and the New Jersey mafia started when ‘The Many Saints of Newark’, the feature film from David Chase, came out. It is set in the same world as ‘The Sopranos’ but takes place before the events of the iconic series and shows Tony’s childhood.

Moreover, Chase has a five-year deal with WarnerMedia which covers films and television shows. Deadline also reported Chase had expressed interest in collaborating with Terence Winter, over a project that’d be set after the film – which takes place between the late 60s and early 70s – and before the series, which is set in 1998.

Further, a top WarnerMedia official also admitted to speaking with Chase about a series related to ‘The Sopranos’ for HBO Max, as per Deadline.

All of this culminated in a commercial during the Super Bowl weekend, directed by Chase, where Jamie-Lynn Sigler appears as Meadow Soprano, and Robert Iler reprises his role as AJ Soprano, Meadow’s brother. The events of the commercial are set seemingly moments after the much-discussed, ambiguous series ending.

However, as per Deadline’s reports, Bloys has now poured water over any plans, saying, “In terms of The Many Saints of Newark, I’m not exactly sure if they’re thinking [about] another movie… I really don’t know what he’s thinking but one thing I can say is I just don’t think anything with The Sopranos family is on the cards”.
