Emmys 2022: Murray Bartlett gets first career win for The White Lotus role

Murray Bartlett won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie at the 2022 Emmys, for his role as Armond in The White Lotus.

This is the 51-year-old Australian actor’s first Emmy win. 

Armond’s character in the satire is a fine portrayal of a man undone. There’s always a hint of an undercurrent in the performance, eclipsed by the hotel manager’s smiling facade, no matter how much his world is falling apart. The White Lotus is a satire series, where Armond hosts various high-profile guests in the eponymous luxury resort. How he deals with their complaints, along with his drug problem and tendency to hit on the men working under him, makes up the bulk of the first season.

Bartlett oscillates between the persona of a broken man and a man on a mission, depending on whether Armond is caught for his actions at work, or whether he’s trying to solve a problem for one of the guests. However, the character also shows a mischievous streak in going out of his way to make life hard for guests who are not particularly well-behaved. For example, he puts a honeymooning couple on the same yacht as a grieving woman, promising the former that they’re in for a romantic evening.

Bartlett thanked showmaker, Mike White, for “giving me one of the best experiences of my life”, adding, “Truly, I adore you and I admire you”.

The Australian actor continued, “To my P-Town family, I love you, to my partner Matt, thank you for being my sanctuary,” Bartlett said as he accepted the award. “And finally I want to thank my mom all the way home in Australia for giving me the most wonderful foundation of unconditional love and inspiring me to believe that we can all do that for each other.”
