ISRO and MapmyIndia’s Google Maps alternative sparks hilarious memes on Twitter

Recently, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and MapmyIndia collaborated to develop an indigenous alternative to Google Maps
and this news has created a stir on social media as netizens are reacted to it
hilariously. They flooded social media platforms with a string of memes which soon
got Google Maps (#GoogleMaps) to dominate trends online. While many celebrated the news, some
used this opportunity to mock the foreign mapping services for their inaccuracy
and other aspects.

Google Map’s CEO Rohan Verma called this
move a “pathbreaking milestone” towards the goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat. He said
MapmyIndia’s user maps, apps and services would “integrate with ISRO’s huge
catalogue of satellite imagery, and earth observation data, and would be a much
better”.

Verma who made the announcement of the venture on Linkedin wrote, “MapmyIndia,
being a responsible, local Indian company, ensures that its maps reflect the
true sovereignty of the country, depicting India’s borders as per the
government of India, and hosts its maps in India.”

The CEO also mentioned that their
solution will be more detailed and extensive along with the privacy-centric,
hyper-local for citizens in comparison with the foreign map apps and solutions.
However, till now both ISRO and MapmyIndia has not provided any timeline for its
launch.
