Jerrod Carmichael, an Emmy-winning comedian, has agreed to host the 80th Golden Globe Awards when they return to NBC next month. He is the first-ever solo Black person up for that job. Variety reported that Carmichael was to be announced by NBC, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and telecast producer Dick Clark Productions on Thursday.

“We’re so excited to have Jerrod Carmichael host the historic 80th Golden Globe Awards,” a statement from HFPA President Helen Hoehne read. “His comedic talents have entertained and thrilled audiences while providing thought-provoking moments that are so important in the times we live. Jerrod is the special kind of talent this show calls for to kick off the awards season.”

Carmichael, who featured in three seasons of the highly regarded sitcom The Carmichael Show on NBC from 2015 to 2017, is sort of returning home. More recently, in April, he served as a guest host on an episode of Saturday Night Live on NBC.

For his role as host of SNL, Carmichael was nominated for an Emmy this year in the category for guest actor in a comedy series. The award for writing in a comedy special was, however, given to him for his historic HBO Max comedy special Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel, which was released this past September.

Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel the comedy film, which Bo Burnham directed, received praise for its frank and hilarious personal narrative. Carmichael revealed his sexual orientation in Rothaniel and discussed the sometimes amusing, sometimes heartbreaking response he had from his family and friends as a result.

The three-hour programme will be hosted by Carmichael on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. The programme, which is being produced jointly by Dick Clark Productions and Jesse Collins Entertainment, and the HFPA, will be broadcast live throughout the nation on NBC and Peacock. As executive producers, Collins and Dionne Harmon will be involved.
