Mrinal Sen (May 14, 1923 to December 30, 2018) was an Indian film director born in Faridpur, now in Bangladesh. After completing school, he came to Calcutta (now Kolkata) to study Physics from Scottish Church Colle, University of Calcutta. As a student, he had been part of the cultural wing of the Communist Party. He is considered to be one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. He explored the social and political situation of his homeland, through his films. His films Baishey Sravana (1960) and Punascha (1961) show his political fervor. His admiration for Italian Neorealists and his colleague Satyajit Ray was also very well known. His second film Neel Akasher Neechey led him to be popular locally and his film Baishey Sravana is the first film that got him international exposure.
His style was aesthetic and his films remain relevant to this day. He is one of the pioneers of New Wave cinema in India.
Mrinal Sen has been the recipient of 18 National Film Awards. The Government of India honored him with Padma Bhushan. Apart from these, the Government of France awarded him the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the Russian Government awarded him Order of Friendship. He was also a recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Apart from Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen is the only filmmaker from India who received awards at the three big film festivals – Cannes Film Festival, Venice Film Festival and Berlin Film Festival.
Mrinal Sen was the first Indian jury member at Cannes. He became a part the group in 1982, the year before his film Kharij won the jury prize.
