Two renowned R&B musicians, Keith Sweat and Bobby Brown, will be facing each other in the next Verzuz battle.
Two renowned R&B musicians, Keith Sweat and Bobby Brown, will be facing each other in the next Verzuz battle, the live stream musical competition series announced on Tuesday. The battle will take place on July 1 as part of the virtual Essence Festival of Culture.
“SURPRISE CELEBRATION!! See y’all THURSDAY!!. @KeithSweat vs @KingBobbyBrown. We’re honored to partner with ESSENCE to bring you this special #VERZUZ,” Verzuz announced in an Instagram post.
This face-off comes in the background of last weekend’s battle between Bow Wow and Soulja Boy.
The last song that singer Bobby Brown released was back in 2018. According to media reports, Brown released “Like Bobby” was his first new song since 2012.
“Like Bobby” emulates an early 2000s hit from the rapper Mystikal; full of growly energy.
“Everybody gonna talk about it, talk about it/ And I don%u2019t really give a f_k about it, f_k about it/ %u2018Cause in the end I gotta be real like Bobby B,%u201D the lyrics goes.
%u201CLike Bobby,%u201D helped Brown in reconnecting with two of the songwriter-producers who guided him in becoming a solo star three decades after his departure from ‘New Edition’.
Brown’s breakout single “Don’t be cruel” was co-written by Babyface as well as the follow-up hits %u201CRoni%u201D and %u201CEvery Little Step.%u201D
His second collaboration came with Teddy Riley, the King of New jack swing. ‘Don’t be cruel was the top-selling US LP of 1989.
After Don%u2019t Be Cruel’s success, Brown scored another million-seller with 1992%u2019s Bobby. He also returned to New Edition for 1996%u2019s Home Again.
Apart from this, Eve and Trina%u2019s battle will be the first Verzuz event dedicated to female rappers. In past years, battles including Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy, Snoop Dogg and DMX, among others got thousands of supporters.
The battle will take place at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET.
