The new animated Halloween special Scooby-Doo movie Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! released on HBO Max on Tuesday, October 4. The movie has finally confirmed the decades-long speculations about Velma Dinkley’s sexual orientation. Clips from the new Scooby-Doo movie went viral after Velma’s sexuality was finally revealed to the audiences.

Velma Dinkley, the brainiac of the group, had been considered a lesbian icon forever, even though no official confirmation was ever made by the creators. This animated movie becomes the first ever acknowledgment by the film series of Velma being a lesbian.

American actress Kate Micucci has voiced Dinkley in the Halloween special movie. In a scene where the character is meeting Coco Diablo, a well-known costume designer for the first time, she is seen losing her usual calm and confidence, and visibly smitten by the lady. When Velma takes the first look at Coco Diablo, her face flushes and we can hear her saying her well-known expression, “jinkies”. In a later scene, a blushing Velma denies having a crush on Coco before admitting to Daphne her nervousness about talking to her.

Filmmaker and screenwriter James Gunn, who wrote the screenplay for the 2002 movie Scooby Doo, confirmed to a fan on Twitter in 2020 that Velma was explicitly gay in his script for the film. “In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script, but the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous, then nothing & finally having a boyfriend”, he said in his tweet that has now been deleted.

Tony Cervone, the co-creator of the 2010 Cartoon Network series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated also posted a picture of Velma with a pride flag in the background in the same year, with the caption “We made our intentions as clear as we could ten years ago. Most of our fans got it. To those that didn’t, I suggest you look closer.”

Fans of Scooby-Doo took to social media to express their joy over finally having years of fan theories come true. Google also joined in the celebration by greeting the users with a shower of lesbian Pride flags and Pride month confetti on the results page when one searches Velma’s name.
