Director SP Jananthan, a celebrated name in the Tamil film industry, died on Sunday at the age of 61. The filmmaker had suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday and died in Chennai at the Apollo Hospital, according to media reports.

A few days ago, Jananthan was found unconscious at his home and was rushed to a hospital nearby where he was declared critically ill, India Today reported.

Before he had fallen ill, the filmmaker was overseeing the editing of his upcoming film ‘Laabam’, which features actors Vijay Sethupathi and Shruti Haasan.

Jananathan made his directorial debut in 2003 with ‘Iyarkai’, a romantic drama, which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil.
