On April 15, 2013, the city of Boston was struck by a devastating act of terrorism when two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. The attacks killed three people and injured over 260 others. The two brothers responsible for the bombing were Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev.
Who are Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev?
Dzhokhar and Tamerlan were born in Kyrgyzstan and later moved to the United States with their family. Tamerlan was the older of the two brothers and had become increasingly radicalized in the years leading up to the attack. He had also become more religious and had expressed extremist views.

In the months before the bombing, Tamerlan had traveled to Russia and spent several months there. During that time, he reportedly became more radicalized and may have received training from extremist groups. It’s believed that he was the mastermind behind the attack and recruited his younger brother to help him carry it out.

Dzhokhar was a student at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at the time of the attack. He had reportedly become radicalized by his older brother and had played a role in the bombing. After the attack, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan went on the run, leading law enforcement on a massive manhunt.
The manhunt eventually led to a shootout between the brothers and police, during which Tamerlan was killed. Dzhokhar was captured the next day and was later convicted of all 30 charges against him, including conspiracy and use of a weapon of mass destruction. He was sentenced to death in 2015 and is currently being held in federal prison.
