Who is Kelly Clarkson?

Kelly Brianne Clarkson is an American singer, songwriter, novelist, and television personality who was born on April 24, 1982. She gained notoriety in 2002 when she won the inaugural season of American Idol and signed a record deal with RCA. Her first track, “A Moment Like This,” peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and ended up being the best-selling single in that nation in 2002.

It was a part of her first studio album, Thankful, which came out in 2003 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. For her second studio album, Breakaway, Clarkson left the management of American Idol in an effort to change her image (2004). Breakaway sold more than 12 million copies worldwide and won two Grammy Awards. It was supported by four US top-ten singles, including the title tune, “Since U Been Gone,” “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” and “Because of You.”

For her third studio album, My December (2007), Clarkson had even more creative control by co-writing every song and serving as the album’s executive producer. Her fourth and fifth studio albums, All I Ever Wanted (2009) and Stronger (2011), reverted to a lighter tone and pop rock sound. The former became Clarkson’s second US number-one album, and the latter made her the first artist to win the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album twice.

Both of her albums produced a Hot 100 number-one song: “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You),” which went on to become her best-selling single globally, and “My Life Would Suck Without You,” which holds the record for the chart’s largest rise to number one in history. With Wrapped in Red, Clarkson then became the first American woman to have her album sell the most throughout the holiday season (2013). Her seventh studio album, Piece by Piece (2015), debuted at number-one in the US, while its title track made it into the top ten. Its single, “Underneath the Tree,” was awarded the ASCAP’s most popular Christmas song recorded in the 21st century.
