The immune system should be efficient in order to reduce the risk of contracting infections. Apart from good sleep and a healthy diet, there are other ways to boost our immune system.

Everyone is born with an innate immune system but adaptive immunity starts as we grow up and become exposed to a host of new bacteria and other harmful cells. Without innate immune protection against COVID-19, the adaptive immune system has to work harder to identify the virus, which is why it is necessary to build strong immunity to fight against Covid.

Here are five ways to improve your immunity:

Choose home-cooked food- Homemade food with naturally derived spices can be beneficial to the immune system. As homemade curries have turmeric and garlic, they are great at building immunity.

Turmeric has curcumin which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Garlic also helps improve the immune system as it contains allicin.

Stimulate your hormones- Studies have shown a link between hormones, mood and the immune system. Oxytocin plays a vital role in the development and function of the immune system.  Oxytocin is also released with social interactions and breastfeeding.

Consume more vitamins and minerals- Consuming foods that contain probiotics stimulates our white blood cells, which can lower the chance of catching a common cold. Foods that have live bacteria and yeasts like yogurt, kefir, lassi, tofu and miso are good for gut health and the digestive system and support our immune system. Pumpkin seeds and mushrooms also help improve the immune system and are good for brain functioning.

Keep moving- Regular exercising is not only important for the immune system but also for our physical and mental health.

Common signs of the weak immune system- Feeling groggy throughout the day, joint and muscle aches, skin issues like red itchy patches, poor gut health and constant tiredness.
