India becoming worlds new coronavirus epicentre, weekend tally higher than US and Brazil put together

India is fast becoming the world’s new coronavirus epicentre, recording 40% of all cases recorded worldwide on Sunday, 6th September. Cases in India on both Saturday and Sunday were higher than those recorded in the US and Brazil, the other two worst-hit countries, put together. As of now, India has the fastest-growing daily COVID-19 caseload of any country in the world.

The country reported more than 90,000 cases on 5th and 6th September, recording nearly 184,000 fresh infections over the weekend. In the same time span, the US had recorded 73,202 infections, while Brazil had reported 45,805 cases. Together the two countries accounted for less than 1.2 lakh cases.

Recording an alarming spike, the COVID-19 cases in the country zoomed past the 40 lakh-mark on Friday, 4th September, merely 13 days after it crossed 30 lakh.

A day later the country reported 90,633 COVID-19 cases in a day, marking the biggest single-day spike in the world since the pandemic began. On Monday, with a further increase in cases, the country surpassed Brazil to become the second worst-hit country globally.

As of today, India has reported 4,280,423 COVID-19 cases. As many as 72,775 people have lost their lives to the virus, since the disease outbreak.
