As news emerged of a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raid at the residence of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Friday, August 19, cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir took a dig aimed at the former on Twitter.

“Mahatma Gandhi had said alcohol destroys both body and soul,” Gambhir, who is a BJP leader and MP from East Delhi, tweeted in Hindi. He also used a hashtag saying, “Delhi deserves better.”

The CBI raid at Manish Sisodia’s house on Friday was in connection with Delhi Excise Duty Policy 2021-22. The federal investigation agency conducted raids in 10 places on August 19, including at the home of Sisodia, who had earlier demanded a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities.

Delhi Lt. Governor VK Saxena had also recommended a CBI investigation into the alleged irregularities of the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.

Gambhir’s comments on the CBI raid on Sisodia’s residence resulted in a standoff between the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is the ruling party of Delhi. It also dragged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi into the subsequent heated debate.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also tweeted that the raid at Sisodia’s house was a result of the good work by the AAP and its recent international recognition. He was referring to a report published by The New York Times, one of the biggest newspapers in the United States, regarding Delhi’s new education model, which has reformed the public education system completely.

Manish Sisodia, apart from being Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister, also holds several other ministries in his portfolio, including Education, Health and Finance. The 50-year-old holds a total of 18 ministries in his portfolio, the most among all cabinet ministers in Delhi.

CM Arvind Kejriwal also tweeted a video later in the day, urging supporters and party workers to let the CBI do its work and accused the central government of harassing AAP leaders. He also pointed out that there were several other CBI raids against his party leaders in the past, but similar to those, the one on Friday will not also find anything against Sisodia.
