Beyond EPICA is a European Union (EU)-funded project that seeks to explore the climate of the past by drilling into Antarctic ice.

The first ice core drilling campaign under the project began in November 2021 at the Little Dome C site in Antarctica, and scientists expect to glean invaluable insights into the composition of the atmosphere, the concentration of greenhouse gasses in it, and the temperatures of the atmosphere 1.5 million years ago.

As per Beyond Epica’s website, “These data will be invaluable for predicting future climate trends and for implementing mitigation strategies.”

The project, which was sanctioned in 2019, is expected to go on for around seven years.
