Answer: Sydney Harbour Bridge
The Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia is undoubtedly one of the most iconic man-made landmarks, and work started on the world’s largest steel arch bridge in 1923, to be completed eight years later in 1932.
Sydney-based urban historian Paul Ashton, spoke to the Guardian about this bridge, saying “The bridge was an early and very powerful symbol of the modern Australian project”, and adding, “It ties in with the idea of ‘Australia unlimited’ – where there were no limits to what a young nation could aim to do if its natural and human resources were harnessed to the full capacity using the latest engineering technology.”

When the bridge was being constructed, there was an idea that the landmark would stand for all eternity. Peter Spearritt, in his biography of the bridge, wrote “Those designing and building the bridge have had to have regard for the most minute details, and for the fact that they are responsible for a structure, not of a day, but for all time”, as per the Guardian.

The Australians have an endearing name for the Sydney Harbour Bridge, referring to it as “coat hangar” due to the shape of the arches. In order to protect the bridge from elements of nature, a coat of paint is constantly applied, reportedly by a team of 100 people and two robots.
For all celebrations, the Sydney Harbour Bridge becomes the centrepiece, drawing viewers’ attention.
