India has sealed a $375 million deal to export the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile to the Philippines, a significant boost to its defence export goals. According to Delfin Lorenzana, the Philippines’ Defence Secretary, they had issued a written request to the BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited “to accept a proposal to buy three batteries of the supersonic missile system for $375 million.”

Each battery, which consists of two missile launchers, a radar, and a command and control centre, is capable of firing two missiles in less than ten seconds. This is India’s first big military export. This supersonic missile is a collaborative effort between India and Russia that may be launched from submarines, ships, aeroplanes, or land platforms.

According to a March 2021 analysis by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, India has long been known as one of the top five weaponry importers in the world (SIPRI). However, the Indian government has recently announced plans to minimise its reliance on imported guns by increasing domestic manufacture. New Delhi wants to increase defence exports in order to improve defence industry and production.

India is now the world’s twenty-fourth largest arms exporter, but the country’s objective is “to expand its defence manufacturing sector and become a bigger arms exporter generating a revenue of $5 billion by 2025.” During bilateral meetings and trips to friendly nations, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has mentioned “various defence equipment on offer.” Changes are also being made to facilitate such exports, including the allocation of cash to Indian missions abroad for the promotion of indigenous armaments.
