Olaf Scholz was appointed as Germany’s new Chancellor on December 8, 2021, and replaced Angela Merkel who had served in the position for 16 years.

After Scholz was appointed, leaders from around the world congratulated him, with French President Emmanuel Macron welcoming the “next chapter” of France-Germany relations, and US President Joe Biden vowing “strong ties” between the two countries. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the 63-year-old Chancellor, saying, ” I look forward to working with him to further strengthen the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, and to meeting him soon for the 6th Inter-Governmental Consultations.”

A lawyer by trade, Scholz joined Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the 1970s, and served in the German parliament – the Bundestag – from 1998 to 2011.

Scholz had earlier served as the Vice Chancellor of the country under Merkel’s leadership, and had been the Federal Minister of Finance from 2018 to 2021.

Scholz’s first year as Chancellor, however, got off to a rocky start as Russia invaded Ukraine two months into his tenure. Determined to take a stance on Russian aggression, Scholz halted the approval of the important Nord Stream 2 pipeline, and completely overhauled Germany’s defence policy, announcing a massive increase to Germany’s defence budget and the shipping of weapons to Ukraine to help Kyiv in the fight against Moscow.
