Rakesh Tikait, Medha Patkar, Yogendra Yadav among 37 named in Delhi Police FIR for R-day violence

The Delhi Police on Wednesday registered FIR against 37 people, including social activist Yogendra Yadav, Medha Patkar, Bharat Kisan Union spokesperson Rakesh Tikait, and other farmer leaders for breaching the NOC issued by it regarding the farmers’ tractor rally held on Republic Day, news agency ANI reports.

Around 200 people have also been detained by the Delhi Police in connection with violence during January 26 tractor rally by protesting farmers, reports PTI.

The FIR by Delhi Police also includes the names of farmer leaders Darshan Pal, Rajinder Singh, Balbir Singh Rajewal, Buta Singh Burjgil, and Joginder Singh Ugraha, ANI quoted the Delhi Police. 

Farmers have been protesting against the Centre’s three new farm laws for over a month now, camping at the several border points of Delhi. However, the peaceful protests turned violent on Republic Day as tractors, cranes and trucks rolled into Delhi, knocking down the barricades at Ghazipur, Tikri and Singhu borders.

The protesters fought with police, overturned vehicles and hoisted a religious flag from the ramparts of the Red Fort, a privilege reserved for India’s tricolour, reports PTI.

The detained people are being questioned in connection with the tractor rally violence, the Delhi Police has said, adding that they are likely to detain and question more people in connection with Tuesday’s violence in the national capital.

The Republic Day tractor rally violence has left over 300 policemen injured, officials said on Wednesday, reports PTI.
