Commonwealth Games 2022: Indian weightlifters shine on day 2, bring home 4 medals

India finished Day 2 at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on a high, winning 4 medals, all coming in weightlifting. The day started with Sanket Sargar winning a silver medal in the men’s 55kg category. The 21-year-old lifted a total of 248kg (113kg+135kg) to finish second. Malaysia’s Mohamad Aniq lifted 249kg (107kg+142kg) to win the gold, while Sri Lanka’s Dilanka Isuru Kumara 225kg (105kg+120kg) took home the bronze.

Weightlifter Gururaja Poojary won India the second medal as he clinched a bronze medal in the men’s 61kg category. Gururaja, a sliver medallist at the 2018 CWG at Gold Coast, lifted a total of 269kg (118kg+151kg) to finish in the third place. Malaysia’s Aznil Bin Bidin Muhamad won the gold medal with a Games record lift of 285kg (127+158). Morea Baru of Papua New Guinea bagged the silver with a total lift of 273kg (121+152).

Mirabai Chanu won gold in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting final. The 27-year-old lifted 84kg (snatch) and 88kg in her first and second attempt, respectively. She then attempted to lift 90kg but unsuccessful. Chanu shattered the Games record in women’s weightlifting and also equalled her national record lift of 88kg in the snatch section.

Towards the end of the day, Bindyarani Devi won the silver medal in women’s 55kg weightlifting. 

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain also cruised to the quarterfinals of the women’s light middle weight category with an easy 5-0 win against Ariana Nicholson. She outpunched the New Zealand pugilist in the 70kg competition.

Meanwhile, Vandana Katariya scored a brace as the Indian women’s hockey team defeated Wales 3-1 to record its second successive win in Pool A. India scored all their three goals from penalty corners.

In a major upset, paddler Manika Batra crashed out of the women’s table tennis team event after losing to Malaysia in the quarterfinals.
