Flood fury in India: Death toll in Assam reaches 102, over 15 lakh affected in Bihar

The flood situation in Assam is deteriorating with
over 56,71,018 people being affected in 30 districts of Assam since May 22. The
state government has set up 615 relief camps and 102 people have lost their
lives in flood-related incidents, till now, according to a data released by the
government.

The flood water has also submerged the Kaziranga National
Park and at least 132 animal have lost their lives due to drowning and other
reasons, so far. This includes 14 rhinos, 5 wild buffaloes, 8 wild boars, 2
swamp deer, 98 hog deer, 1 sambar, 3 porcupines and 1 Python.

In Bihar, 11 districts have been badly affected by the floods
and at least 10 people have died and 15 lakh have been hit.

According to the state disaster management authority, Darbhanga
is the worst-affected district with 5.36 lakh people either being displaced or
trapped inside home.

Several rivers, including Baghmati, Burhi Gandak, Kamlabalan,
Lalbakeya, Adhwara, Khiroi, Mahananda and Ghaghra are flowing above the danger
mark due to incessant rainfall. Many trains on Muzaffarpur-Narkatiaganj and
Samastipur-Darbhanga sections had to change their routes while others had to
short-terminated, a railway official said.

As many
as seventeen teams of the National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF) and eight of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) are involved in the rescue
operations. As many as 1.36 lakh people have been evacuated from the affected areas, the department said, adding that 14,011 people have put up in 26
relief camps.
