IPL 2022: Bowlers power LSG to 20 runs win over PBKS in a low scoring match

  • It was Lucknow Super Giants' sixth win in nine matches 
  • The franchise is now placed third on the points table with 12 points 
  • Mohsin Khan, Krunal Pandya and Dushmantha Chameera shared seven wickets between them

Lucknow Super Giants defeated Punjab Kings by 20 runs to win their sixth match of IPL 2022 in their ninth outing at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Friday. Lucknow’s win means Kagiso Rabada’s four-wicket haul for 38 runs went in vain as Mohsin Khan, Krunal Pandya and Dushmantha Chameera bowled three brilliant spells to restrict Punjab Kings to 133 for 8 in 20 overs as they attempted to chase a 154 runs target.

Mohsin took three wickets for 24 runs while Krunal and Chameera got two for 11 and 17 runs in four overs respectively.

Quinton de Kock, Deepk Hooda’s 85 runs partnership proves crucial

Put in to bat first Lucknow Super Giants
suffered an early blow losing their in-form captain KL Rahul as Kagiso Rabada
got him caught behind by wicket-keeper Jitesh Sharma for 6.

However, LSG could make a solid
recovery, with opener Quinton de Kock and Deepak Hooda building an 85 runs
partnership and batting cautiously to score 39 runs in six overs of powerplay.

The partnership was broken by Sandeep
Sharma when he dismissed opener de Kock for 46 off 37 balls as LSG lost their
second wicket for 98.

Krunal Pandya walked in to bat in the
13th over as he and Hooda took their team’s total beyond the triple-figure
mark. After LSG reached the 100-run mark, Jonny Bairstow ran out Hooda for 34
as Lucknow lost their third wicket for 104.

Collapse restricts LSG to 153 for 8

At this point of their innings, a
collapse has restricted LSG to a dismal total. In the next over Krunal Pandya
was dismissed by Rabada for 7 as the pacer took his second wicket of the match
and Lucknow lost their fourth wicket for 105. After three balls Ayush Badoni
became the South African speedster’s third victim for 4 and LSG lost half of
their side for 109.

Wickets kept tumbling for Lucknow Super
Giants as leg spinner Rahul Chahar dismissed Marcus Stoinis caught and bowled
for 1. Chahar came back in his next over and dismissed Jason Holder for 11
reducing LSG to 127 for 6 in the  18th
over.

In the next over Rabada took his fourth
wicket by dismissing Dushmantha Chameera for 17 off 10 balls as LSG lost their
eighth wicket for 144. Rabada finished his four-over spell with four wickets for 38 runs.

Tailender Mohsin Khan’s boundary and a
six helped Lucknow go past the 150-run mark as they were restricted to 153/8 in
20 overs.

Punjab Kings choke against LSG bowlers

In a low scoring contest, chasing a decent target, Punjab Kings captain Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan provided a steady start. Agarwal hit two boundaries and as many sixes during his 25 runs innings off 17 balls before being dismissed by Dushmantha Chameera. After Agarwal’s departure, PBKS lost wickets at regular intervals.

Just after the powerplay, they lost Dhawan, who has been patchy and consumed 15 balls to score 5 runs before Ravi Bishnoi bamboozled him in the 7th over.

In the 8th over, Krunal Pandya struck to dismiss Bhanuka Rajapaksa. In a span of five overs, Mohsin Khan removed dangerous Liam Livingstone, who hit two sixes. In the very next over, Jitesh Sharma fell to Krunal to give him his second wicket of the evening.  

Jonny Bairstow provided some hope late in the innings during his slow but steady 32 off 28 balls, but his stay was cut short by Chameera in the 16th over derailed. Punjab Kings’ chase.

With both Kagiso Rabada and Rahul Chahar falling to Mohsin Khan in the 18th over, Punjab Kings were out of the contest. 

Following Friday’s win, Lucknow Super Giants went up to the third position on the points table with 12 points in 9 matches.
