In a battle of two bottom-placed teams in IPL 2022 on Thursday, Mumbai Indians defeated Chennai Super Kings by five wickets to win their third match of the season at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. MI chased down CSK’s 97 all out with 31 balls to spare.

Tim David, who was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 8.25 crore, smashed a six off Moeen Ali’s fifth ball of the 15th over to complete the chase in style. David also hit a six in the first ball of this Moeen over.

The right-handed batter’s batting marked the mood of the MI dressing room who are now eager to finish the season with wins in their remaining matches. MI are already out of the playoff race and currently placed at the rock bottom of the points table.

On Thursday, MI captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bowl, a decision that proved fruitful with three CSK batters falling for ducks.

Batting first, CSK were rattled by Daniel Sams in the PowerPlay. On the second ball of the match, Sams trapped Devon Conway in front with a length ball that shaped back into the Kiwi batter’s bat and pad. Umpire raised his finger. Conway took a review but he had to go as the Decision Review System (DRS) was unavailable due to power disturbance in the broadcasting department. In a span of two balls, Sams struck again. This time it was Moeen Ali to depart. CSK lost two batters in two balls who failed to add a single run to their innings.

In the second over, Jasprit Bumrah trapped Robin Uthappa in front. Again DRS was not available and the batter had to go back without taking a review. Ambati Rayudu was the fifth batter to fall in the PowerPlay as CSK lost their top half for 29 runs.

At this stage, captain MS Dhoni tried to prevent the collapse by playing 33-ball 36 runs innings. The right-hander hit two sixes and four boundaries during his unbeaten knock but his team could not even cross 100 runs mark as CSK were bundled out for 97 in 20 overs.
