Ravindra Jadeja on Saturday “relinquished” Chennai Super Kings captaincy which was handed back to veteran Mahendra Singh Dhoni after the team lost six out of its eight matches in the ongoing edition of Indian Premier League.

“Ravindra Jadeja has decided to relinquish captaincy to focus and concentrate more on his game and has requested MS Dhoni to lead CSK. MS Dhoni has accepted to lead CSK in the larger interest & to allow Jadeja to focus on his game,” CSK said in a statement.

This season, Jadeja has not been at his best with the bat or the ball, and numerous analysts have stated that captaincy has taken its toll on the 33-year-old.

Jadeja has scored 112 runs in eight matches, with an average of 22.40 and a strike rate of 121.74. With the ball, he has only taken five wickets in eight matches with an economy rate of 8.19 RPO.

“Jadeja is clearly struggling with the bat, which is not a good sign. It is very important for him to perform with the willow because, if he keeps failing in the same manner, things will get extremely tough for the Chennai Super Kings. The pressure of captaincy is clearly showing on him,” Aakash Chopra, a former India opener, stated on his YouTube channel.

Dhoni has led CSK in every season of the IPL since the league’s inception in 2008. He led them to four championships, the most recent of which came last year.

CSK are presently ninth in the IPL Points Table, having won two of their eight games. Their next game comes on Sunday, when they face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the second game of the day.
