Ravindra Jadeja was made Chennai Super Kings’ new captain after MS Dhoni stepped down from the position. The all-rounder has been a part of the IPL franchise since 2012.

Nicknamed ‘Sir’, Ravindra Jadeja, in the past few years, has come up the ranks to become one of India’s premier spinning all-rounders across formats. The 32-year-old has the capability of turning the game on its head with his bowling, batting and fielding.

Hailing from Jamnagar, Jadeja won the 2008 U-19 World Cup under the leadership of current Indian skipper Virat Kohli. He took 10 wickets in six games at an average of 13 in the tournament.

Jadeja kicked off his senior career with a blazing half-century on debut. Amongst so many other records he holds, Jadeja is the first Indian left-arm spinner to take 150 ODI wickets and the fifth-fastest player to complete the double of 2000 runs and get 200 wickets in Tests.

The Saurashtra player has three triple tons against his name in first-class cricket. He made his Test debut in 2012, after going through a rough patch starting from the 2009 T20 World Cup to somewhere around 2011. Jadeja can pitch the ball at a given spot for overs and overs. This makes him a terrific Test bowler. He along with Ravichandran Ashwin played architects in India’s historic whitewash of the Aussies in 2013. The two then became indispensable cogs of the Indian team.

Ravindra Jadeja was chosen by the Rajasthan Royals for the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League in 2008, and he was instrumental in their win. Jadeja scored 135 runs in 14 games at a strike rate of 131.06, with his top performance of 36* against Kings XI Punjab. In 2009, he went even better, scoring 295 runs at a strike rate of 110.90 and allowing less than 6.5 runs per over. Rajasthan Royals skipper Shane Warne described Jadeja as a “superstar in the making.” Warne also dubbed him “Rockstar.”

Jadeja was barred from playing in the 2010 IPL due to contractual issues. In 2011, he was purchased for Rs 9.8 crore by the Kochi Tuskers Kerala. The Kochi Tuskers were kicked out of the IPL in September 2011, and in the 2012 IPL player auction, Jadeja was purchased by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 9.8 crore following a tie-breaker with the Deccan Chargers, who paid the same amount. Jadeja was the most priced player in the auction that year. He was named Man of the Match in the season’s second match against the Deccan Chargers for his all-around effort. He was chosen to the Cricinfo CLT20 XI for his 2014 achievements.

Jadeja scored 37 runs in the final over bowled by Harshal Patel in the 19th match of the 2021 Indian Premier League. He went on to take 3/13 in his four overs and was awarded the match’s player of the match.

According to an official statement, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will succeed Mahendra Singh Dhoni as captain of the master franchise Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2022.

Jadeja, who has been with the Chennai Super Kings since 2012, will be only the third player to head the team.

According to the announcement, Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and in the future.

Dhoni, who has been CSK’s captain since the league’s start in 2008, maybe playing in his final IPL season this year. He has already announced his retirement from international cricket.

CSK has won the IPL four times (in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021), second only to Mumbai Indians, and has the greatest win percentage of matches among all IPL teams.
