In basketball, the hoop is mounted 10 feet above the ground to a basketboard at the end of each side of the court, with the two opposing teams’ main objective being shooting the basketball through the hoop. 

Two points are awarded to each player for shooting a field goal, while three points are awarded if the shot is taken from beyond the three-point line. 

When a player fouls another, the fouled player or one designated to shoot technical fouls is given one, two or three one-point free throws. The team with most points at the end of the stipulated time wins, although if the scores are tied then en extra period is mandated. 

Players advance the ball by bouncing it and running – called dribbling – or by passing it to teammates. On offense, players may use a variety of shots – the layup, the jump shot, or a dunk; on defense, they may steal the ball from a dribbler, intercept passes, or block shots

Basketball is usually played with four 15-minute quarters.
