The pituitary gland or hypophysis is a pea-sized endocrine gland located at the base of the brain. Weighing about 0.5 grams, it is a protrusion off the bottom of the hypothalamus at the base of the brain.

It is also know as the master gland because it not only secretes its own hormones but also controls the functions of other glands.

It helps in controlling growth, blood pressure, energy management, all functions of the sex organs, thyroid glands and metabolism as well as some aspects of pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, water/salt concentration at the kidneys, temperature regulation and pain relief.

The hypothalamus communicates with the anterior lobe through hormones and with the poterior lobe via nerve impulses.
