Keeping up with fashion trends: LED lights, time to glow up

Futurism in fashion is taking over the industry. Incorporating bright and bold colours with metallic touch and adding bright LED lights on some outfits with a flashing text message are some of the recent trends that are headlining the glamour industry.

The latest incorporation in the LED light trend comes from Brazil. Rolê Aleatório, an artist, sported a glowing hairstyle with microchipped LED lights on his scalp. 

In over 18 hours the video has garnered over 2.5 million views. 

“The weirdos are taking over but in a good way”, commented one on Twitter and you have to agree.

In 2015, BAFTA awards were literally lit up by LED light outfits by “technology-enhanced gowns”, as described by the designers of apparel brand House of Fraser.

Even though the enhancement was a little weird, experts say that the cultural shift in fashion is all about accepting the weirdness. 

“It’s a form of expression,” said the CEO of Electric Styles, a San-Diego based business that creates ‘light-up apparel’.

The company has grown to a $10 million dollar clothing brand since its establishment in 2012, reported CNN. 

Over the years people have picked up on the LED trend for the futuristic look it gives. And the possibilities are endless. 

Switch Embassy, a New York-based apparel startup that allows you to share customized text messages without vocalizing it but just displaying them on your outfits. According to them, the LED embedded textiles are durable and can be conveniently recharged.

ETEREshop entered the scene with ‘LED light cage dresses’ specifically for DJs to sport in the darkness of a nightclub. This way the DJ’s can match the music with their outfit. This is the definition of suiting up but make it gen-Z. 

The trend of LED lights is the child of flashing fashion statements and technological advancements. While this type of clothing was initially designed for performers, it has now become everyday apparel that could open the doors for more out-of-the-box and revolutionary trends.
