Mirabai Chanu is ‘worthy’ of Thors hammer: Chris Hemsworth

Hollywood actor Chris Hemsworth called Mirabai Chanu a “legend” as he praised the star weightlifter for her power-packed performance at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

The Olympic silver medallist won on a gold at the event by putting up a commanding show in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting final on Day 2. The 27-year-old lifted 84kg (snatch) and 88kg in her first and second attempt, respectively. She attempted to lift 90kg but was not successful. She, however, managed to shatter the Games record in women’s weightlifting in snatch, ending with a total lift of 201kg (88kg 113kg).

Several people hailed the star weightlifter on social media. One of them tagged actor Chris Hemsworth in a tweet, writing, “Time for Thor to give up his hammer.”

Replying to the same, the 38-year-old actor, wrote, “She is worthy! Congrats, Saikhom, you legend.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu had also congratulated and praised Chanu after her win. 

“Every Indian is delighted that she’s won a Gold and set a new Commonwealth record at the Birmingham Games. Her success inspires several Indians, especially budding athletes,” PM Modi tweeted.

President Murmu, tweeted, “Mirabai Chanu scripts history by winning weightlifting gold medal, setting a new record in #CommonwealthGames. Her first gold medal for India in the ongoing Games has created a wave of joy & celebration across the country. Well done, Mirabai! India is proud of you & your medals.”

After winning the medal, Chanu had tweeted, “Lifting 201kg never felt easy but thanks to the love and wishes of billions back home, every challenge is just an attempt away.”
