The Mumbai Police informed on Wednesday, December 22, that the investigation of alleged extortion in connection with the drugs-on-cruise case, in which Shahrukh Khan’s son, Aryan Khan, was earlier arrested, has been halted until the next order. No evidence of extortion has been found related to the case yet.

According to an ANI report, the police said, “Investigation of alleged extortion matter in connection with drugs on cruise case halted until next order. Mumbai Police had constituted SET (Special Enquiry Team) to investigate and had questioned around 20 people. No case registered so far as no evidence found yet.”

The report also quoted a senior Mumbai police officer as saying that the team is still waiting for some documents and that no inquiry report has been submitted so far.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) had arrested Khan and a few others on October 3 after a raid on a cruise party, where drugs had allegedly been recovered.

He was subsequently granted bail three weeks later, on October 28, with one of the conditions being his required weekly appearance before the NCB’s south Mumbai office every Friday. Khan was only recently exempted from this condition by a single bench of Justice N W Sambre.

The bureau had found itself in the middle of a controversy when an independent witness, Prabhakar Sail, alleged that the zonal director leading the probe, Sameer Wankhede, among other officials, had demanded an extortion of Rs 25 crores for letting off Aryan Khan. Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik had also accused Wankhede of extortion, among other violations in the central agency’s operation.

Wankhede’s term as the Mumbai zone chief of the NCB is expected to come to an end on December 31. Starting with actor Rhea Chakraborty, the NCB, led by Sameer Wankhede, probed and detained a number of Bollywood celebrities for drug-related offences.
