Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday apologised for criticising PM Narendra Modi for not mentioning former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s role in liberating Bangladesh in 1971.

Tharoor from his Twitter handle tweeted, “don’t mind admitting when I am wrong. Yesterday, on the basis of a quick reading of headlines and tweets, I tweeted ‘everyone knows who liberated Bangladesh’, implying that @narendramodi had omitted to acknowledge Indira Gandhi. It turns out he did.”

Bangladesh is celebrating the Golden Jubilee of its founding day and PM Modi has been invited as the chief guest.

During his speech, PM Modi said that Bangladesh’s freedom struggle was “supported from every nook and corner of India, from every party and every section of the society”.

“Indira Gandhi ji‘s efforts and her contribution to the freedom struggle is well known,” he added.

This was, however, missed by Tharoor who took to Twitter to slam PM Modi for omitting Indira Gandhi’s role.

“International education: our PM is giving Bangladesh a taste of Indian ‘fake news’. The absurdity is that everyone knows who liberated Bangladesh,” Tharoor tweeted.
