Tamei assembly constituency has Wilubou Newmai of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking on G.N. Kumuiteung of the Indian National Congress (INC) and Awangbow Newmai of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) this year in the Manipur assembly elections.
Awangbow Newmai of the NPF had won the Tamei seat in 2017 when the INC swept Manipur winning 28 of Manipur’s 60 assembly seats. Awangbow Newmai had beaten his closest rival Z. Kikhonbou Newmai by over 747 votes. Z. Kikhonbou Newmai had contested that election on a BJP ticket.
In 2012, the seat was won by Z. Kikhonbou Newmai of the INC.
Tamei falls under the Tamenglong district and the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency, which is made up of 28 assembly seats.

Lorho S. Pfoze of Naga People’s Front represented Outer Manipur as a member of Parliament in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Pfoze defeated Houlim Shokhopao Mate from the BJP with a margin of 73,782 votes.

The Tamei assembly constituency voted in the second phase of the Manipur elections on March 5, 2022, along with 21 other constituencies.
Results will be declared on March 10, along with those for elections in four other states, including Uttar Pradesh.
