‘Truly a world leader…’: Yashwant Sinha’s jibe at PM Modi over vaccine row

Former BJP leader and Trinamool Congress vice president Yashwant Sinha targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Twitter with a video clip, in which India’s UN representative says that, “India has supplied more vaccines globally than it has vaccinated its own people.”

His criticism comes at a time when 17 people have been arrested in Delhi for putting up posters that read, “Modiji, Why did you send the vaccines for our kids outside India?” Many other leaders, including Congress’s Rahul Gandhi, Shashi Tharoor and Trinamool’s Mahua Moitra have criticised the PM for vaccine shortage across the country.

The clip posted by Sinha is from an informal meeting of the United Nations assembly, which was headed by UN President Volkan Bozkır on March 27. In the clip, Indian representative Nagaraj Naidu is seen discussing about COVID vaccine. He said that the country had exported more vaccines than the number of vaccinations in the country. The video was used by many opposition parties, including the Congress party and the Aam Aadmi Party to slam the government.

India has so far administered over 18 crore jabs since the start of its inoculation drive in January. Union Health Minister Dr. Harshvardhan on Saturday said that over 50 crore doses will be administered by the end of July.
