Vice-President elections 2022: BJP likely to pick its candidate in board meeting today
- The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has already nominated Droupadi Murmu as Presidential candidate
- Murmu will be the first Adivasi woman to occupy the country's top constitutional post
- The term of incumbent Vice President Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to pick the party’s candidate for the post of Vice President on Saturday in its parliamentary board meeting.
The BJP parliamentary board is the party’s apex organisational body, which has members including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, JP Nadda, among others.

Meanwhile, another meeting of all BJP MPs will be held ahead of the presidential election, which is scheduled to be held on July 18.
Regarding the Presidential elections, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has already nominated Droupadi Murmu, who is contesting against the Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha.

After BJP announced the name of Murmu, who belongs to a tribal community in Odisha, for the presidential post, all eyes are now on if the party will opt for a more seasoned face from its ranks for the vice presidential candidate.
It can be seen that Murmu will be the first Adivasi woman to occupy the country’s top constitutional post if she wins the presidential elections.

In 2017, the party had surprised everyone by picking the then Bihar governor Ram Nath Kovind, a Dalit, for the presidential contest. It had then named the then Cabinet minister M Venkaiah Naidu, a former BJP president and veteran parliamentarian, as its vice president candidate.
The term of incumbent Vice President Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10.

The last date for filing of nomination papers of the candidate for the elections is July 19 and the poll is scheduled to be held on August 6.
