Earlier, West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran won the toss for the second consecutive time and but decided to bat first, having chosen to bowl just two days ago. The sole alteration to their starting lineup was the addition of legspinner Hayden Walsh Jr. to replace injured left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, who fractured his thumb during the first ODI. Avesh Khan, a fast bowler who replaced Prasidh Krishna in the lineup, had his first ODI start for India.

The West Indian openers did what their peers in the Indian team did in the first ODI. The 65-run first wicket partnership between Hope and Kyle Meyers laid the foundation of a big total. However Indian spinners then provided quick breakthroughs to reduce the hosts to 130/3. But then skipper Pooran and Hope joined hands for a 117-run partnership that deflated the Indian bowling attack.

But in the next over itself, the swashbuckling batter reached his ton with a huge six off Yuzvendra Chahal. When Hope reached his ton, West Indies were 258/4 in 44.4 overs.
