What if World Test Championship final ends in a draw or tie?

  • The first day of the WTC final was called off after frequent rain delays
  • The match will extend until the reserve day on June 23 due to the delays in the first three days
  • If the match ends in a draw or tie, the trophy will be shared between India and New Zealand

With the World Test Championship (WTC) final getting frequently disrupted due to bad light and rains at Hampshire Bowl, the match ending without a result looms large. With the entire first day of the match being called off, it is guaranteed that the reserve day on Wednesday will be made use of. But what if the final ends in a draw or a tie?

India and New Zealand, the two finalists of the WTC, will share the ICC Test Championship Mace, in case of a draw or tied Test match.

The first two days of the match have been all about batsmen negotiating the playing conditions and surviving the seam movement under overcast to cloudy conditions. Runs have been hard to come by, and the bowlers have not been conceding runs easily, and that is reflected in the overall run rate of 2.25.

The match can go either team’s way if the next three days are carried out without more delays. But the gloomy and rainy weather conditions have let the match complete only 141.1 overs in two days. India scored 217 of 92.1 overs in the first innings, and New Zealand are on 101-2 after 49 overs.
