Annu Rani has created history by becoming the first-ever Indian woman to win the bronze medal in javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games 2022. It took Rani four attempts to achieve her feat, when she managed to throw the javelin for 60m.

Kelsey-Lee Barber of Australia, who is currently the world champion in women’s javelin throw, showed her mettle once again by winning gold via her 64.43m throw. Another Australian, Mackenzie Little (64.27m), won silver. Here’s a tweet by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), congratulating Rani on her momentous success:

India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has also praised Rani’s achievement, acknowledging that “she displayed great resilience and showed topmost skills”:

Olympic Gold medallist Neeraj Chopra had earlier won gold at the men’s javelin throw event of the 2018 Gold Coast CWG, while Kashinath Naik clinched bronze at the 2010 CWG in Delhi. Rani’s win makes her the third Indian to win a medal in javelin throw at the multi-sport event.

Sandeep Punia won bronze in the men’s 10,000m walking race event, clocking 38:49.21. Nitu Ganghas and Amit Panghal also won gold medals in their respective boxing categories.
