IPL 2022 Auction: SRH splurge on Windies talent in post-Warner era. Check full squad

  • Washington Sundar was purchased by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 8.75 crore
  • The team bought Nicholas Pooran for Rs 10.75 crore
  • They also bought T Natarajan for Rs 4 cr

The Sunrisers Hyderabad spent big on West Indies players in the two-day IPL mega auction in Bangalore, buying wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran for Rs 10.75 crore and Romario Shephard for Rs 7.75 crore as they prepare for life after protagonist and former captain David Warner.

Warner is one of the greatest players in IPL history, scoring over 5,000 runs at an astonishing rate and leading the Orange Army to the title in 2016. But the Aussie southpaw had a poor IPL 2021, scoring just 195 runs in eight innings and was left out of the SRH squad for much of the second half of the season in the UAE. 

The 35-year-old was picked up by the Delhi Capitals for Rs 6.25 crore this auction.

SRH also bought top-order batter Rahul Tripathi (Rs 8.5 crore), all-rounder Washington Sundar (Rs 8.5 crore), while shoring up their bowling department with the likes of  T Natarajan (Rs 4 crore), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (Rs 4.2 crore) and Marco Jansen (Rs 4.2 crore) among others.

The SRH retained Kane Williamson for Rs 14 crores, Abdul Samad and Umran Malik for Rs 4 crores each. Kane Williamson, the backbone of the Sunrisers’ middle-order batting lineup, has been a huge help to the team. Umran Malik became a sensation after clocking 150kmph in the 2016 IPL. Abdul Samad possesses exceptional hitting ability.

SRH full squad:

Kane Williamson, Umran Malik, Abdul Samad, Washington Sundar, Nicholas Pooran, T Natarajan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Priyam Garg, Rahul Tripathi, Abhishek Sharma, Kartik Tyagi, Shreyas Gopal, Jagadeesha Suchith, Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen, Romario Shepherd, Sean Abbott, R Samarth, Shashank Singh, Saurabh Dubey, Vishnu Vinod, Glenn Phillips, Fazalhaq Farooqi. 

The IPL 2022 auction saw teams spending a total of Rs 551.7 crore on 204 players, including 67 foreigners. There were a total of 11 players sold for Rs 10 crore or more – the most in the history of IPL. 

Ishan Kishan fetched the highest bid – of Rs 15.25 crore from the Mumbai Indians.
