Two-time World Cup-winning former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on Saturday. The finisher, as he is known in the cricketing space, wrapped up his innings in style, with a post and a song.

Making the announcement on Instagram, Dhoni posted a montage of photos from his career, with the iconic song ‘Main pal do pal ka shayar hoon’ (I am poet of a moment), playing in the background.

The song, Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hoon, was sung by Mukesh in the 1976 movie Kabhie Kabhie.

The Jharkhand wicket-keeper batsman’s announcement ended over one year of suspense and also an era during which his often unorthodox leadership and finishing skills became the stuff of legends.

Having started his international journey in 2004, Dhoni has led India to victories in several marquee tournaments. He is the only captain in cricketing history to hold an ICC World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy, and an ICC T20 World Cup.

The 39-year-old will, however, compete in this year’s IPL, which gets underway in the UAE from September 19 after being moved out of India due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
