India’s greatest wicket keeper-batsman MS Dhoni has been just as integral to the Indian Premier League (IPL) from the very first season.

One of the greatest players in the competition’s history, Dhoni has featured in every edition of the IPL so far. He has amassed over 4,400 runs and effected a record 133 dismissals in the league, apart from captaining the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to three titles.

The Ranchi-born right-handed batsman has time and again used his extensive tactical nous from his bird’s eye position behind the stumps to make game-changing decisions or play a swashbuckling knock to snatch victory from the jaws of defeats.

Although the 39-year-old announced his retirement from international cricket on Saturday, he will, however, compete in this year’s IPL, reported PTI.

The 13th edition of the tournament will get underway in the UAE from September 19.

Here’s a look at Mahi’s top five most memorable innings from his IPL career:

1. 66* (33) vs Kolkata Knight Riders, 2010:

Following a slow start to the innings for CSK, Dhoni and S Badrinath added an unbeaten 109 runs from the final 65 deliveries to post a competitive total of 164-3, with the former Indian skipper accelerating in the final two overs of the innings to score a quickfire 66 from 33 balls.

He then masterminded KKR’s batting collapse, with an inspired bowling performance from the CSK bowling attack sealing a comfortable 55-run victory.

2. 67* (37) vs Sunrisers Hydrebad, 2013:

An uncharacteristic slow start to his innings saw Dhoni play six consecutive dot balls and top-edge a Dale Steyn delivery to give Amit Mishra – a Sunriser – a seemingly easy catch, which the leg-spinner missed.

Dhoni upped the ante from that ball, blasting seven fours and four sixes to seal a five-wicket win for CSK.

3. 75* (46) vs Rajasthan Royals, 2019:

Dhoni was tasked with shepherding CSK to safety after they had been reduced to 27-3 against Rajasthan Royals at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

‘Captain Cool’, as Dhoni is referred to as given his temperament on field, formed a 61-run partnership with partner-in-crime Suresh Raina before changing gears and firing the Super Kings to a total of 175. His contribution helped CSK get a defenable total, which his team did with eight runs to spare.

4. 79* (44) vs Kings XI Punjab, 2018:

Dhoni hit back at critics with a thrilling run chase against Punjab at Mohali. With Chris Gayle powering the home side to a 197-run total in the first innings, Chennai found themselves in a difficult spot having lost their top three batsmen with just 56 runs on the board.

Dhoni smashed six fours and five sixes in an explosive innings, although his team fell short of the target by four runs.

5. 84* (48) vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, 2019:

Dhoni played arguably his best knock in the yellow jersey in yet another losing cause, this time in a nail-biting one run loss to rivals Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Parthiv Patel scored a fifty to help RCB post a humble 161-run total, with Steyn and Umesh Yadav making light work of the CSK top order to reduce them to 28-4. Dhoni was once again tasked with rebuilding the innings for his side.

With 26 runs to win in the final over, Dhoni displayed his hard-hitting prowess, scoring three maximums and a boundary in the first five balls. With 2 runs to get from the last delivery, however, Dhoni was run out to seal CSK’s defeat.
