Railway minister shares pic of postage stamp issued in 1947 to celebrate independence

India is set to celebrate its 75th Independence Day on Sunday, August 15. Every year, the day brings back a thousand memories of the 200-year long struggle for India’s freedom from British rule. Celebrating the occasion, which marks the remembrance of the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the picture of the postage stamp issued in 1947 to commemorate India’s Independence.

Here’s the picture.

The stamp in the post is the first postage stamp of independent India and was issued on November 21, 1947.  It was valued at three and one-half annas and was meant for foreign correspondence.

While the second stamp of independent India was the Ashoka Lion Capital stamp. It was the first stamp issues for domestic use. It was released on December 15, 1947, and valued at 1.50 annas.

The Union Minister added the hashtag #AzadiKaAmritMahotsav along with the post.

Azaadi Mahotsav is the Central government’s 75-week campaign to commemorate 75 years of India’s independence struggle. The campaign began on March 12 this year and will culminate after 75 weeks on August 15 next year.

Meanwhile, a day before Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced that August 14 will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in memory of the struggles and sacrifices of people, who were killed in the partition riots between India and Pakistan. He further said that the pain of partition can never be forgotten.  

  In a tweet, Modi said that millions were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence caused by the partition.  

India will celebrate its 75 years of Independence on August 15. A grand event and parade will be held in Red Fort, where Prime Minister will also deliver a speech. The theme for this year’s Independence Day is ‘Nation First, Always First.’
