Who is Tyler Rogers?

Taylor Rogers, a left-handed reliever for the San Francisco Giants, has signed a three-year, $33 million contract, according to The Athletic. Taylor Rogers and his twin brother Tyler Rogers will reportedly be playing together for the first time since Jose and Ozzie Canseco were teammates with the 1990 Oakland Athletics. They will both be playing for the Giants.

Who is Tyler Rogers?

Tyler Scott Rogers, a Major League Baseball pitcher for the San Francisco Giants, was born on December 17, 1990.

Tyler’s older identical twin brother, Taylor, is a Major League Baseball pitcher. The lads were the fifth set of twins to play in Major League Baseball.

Rogers participated in baseball competitions for Austin Peay State University and Garden City Community College. The Giants selected Rogers in the tenth round of the 2013 MLB Draft. He debuted in the MLB in 2019. In both 2020 and 2021, he had the most games pitched in the National League. He is renowned for using an unusual sidearm technique known as “submarine pitching,” in which the ball is thrown below the level of the knee.

In Littleton, Colorado, Rogers attended Chatfield Senior High School. Rogers attended Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kansas after graduating from high school but being undrafted. There, in his sophomore season, he was 6-3 with a 2.39 earned run average (ERA), pitched in 34 games, and struck out 50 batters in 49 innings. He was chosen for the second team of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. 

Rogers played college baseball for the Governors at Austin Peay State University after transferring there after two seasons.

There, as a junior transfer in 2012, he went 4-4 with a 2.25 ERA, 52 strikeouts in 59.2 innings, tied a record for appearances in the Ohio Valley Conference with 38, and made 10 game-saving appearances.

Rogers was chosen by the San Francisco Giants with the 312nd overall pick in the 10th round of the 2013 MLB Draft. A $7,500 signing bonus was offered to him. Rogers spent his rookie campaign between the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes and the Arizona League Giants, posting a combined record of 1-1 with a 2.30 ERA in 27 innings. He pitched to a 4-0 record with two saves and a 1.81 ERA in 89+2/3 innings in 2014 while splitting the season between the Augusta GreenJackets and the San Jose Giants.

The Giants chose Rogers’ contract and elevated him to the major leagues on August 27, 2019. He pitched a scoreless inning in relief that evening against the Arizona Diamondbacks to make his debut. For the Giants, Rogers concluded the 2019 season 2-0 with a 1.02 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 17+2/3 innings.  His sinker, at 82.2 mph, and four-seam fastball, on average, were the slowest pitches in major league baseball in 2019.
