Avalanche kills four skiers in Utah

Four skiers were killed during an avalanche at a recreational
area around Millcreek Canyon in the US state of Utah, according to a report by various media sources.

Reportedly, Utah Highway Patrol officials confirmed that apart from four deaths, four more people were rescued.

It has been further understood that all eight skiers, who were
aged between early 20s to late 30s as according to police spokesperson Sergeant
Melody Cutler, had avalanche beacons.

“This is a terrible tragedy and our prayers go out to the
victims and families involved. We are grateful to the first responders and
others who engaged in this rescue and recovery effort. With avalanche danger
high right now, please exercise extreme caution”, Utah governor Spencer Cox was
quoted as saying.

“We are heartbroken over the tragic news of four fatalities as the result of an avalanche in the Millcreek Canyon area this afternoon,” Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson was reported as saying in a statement.

She further noted that several disaster response units, including the Sheriff’s Canyon Search and Rescue unit, police, and fire authority were at the site, responding to what has reportedly been Utah’s third fatal avalanche of 2021 so far.
