A
19-year-old teenager from Britain, who met with a car
accident last year, is coming out of a 10-month coma without any knowledge of
the COVID-19. However, he himself has tested positive for the virus twice,
reported The Guardian.

At the time when Joseph
Flavill was struck by a car while walking on the road in Staffordshire,
England, on March 1, UK had reported less than
40 cases of coronavirus. Even the first nationwide lockdown was also imposed a
few weeks later on March 23 when Britain saw a surge in COVID-19 cases of around
more than 3.8 million.

Flavill suffered a severe brain injury and after being in
coma for months has finally began to respond and is slowly recovering.

According to The
Guardian, Flavill’s aunt, Sally Flavill Smith said, “He won’t know anything about the pandemic as he’s been
asleep for 10 months. His awareness is starting to improve now but we just
don’t know what he knows”.

She also said that the family had attempted to tell him on video calls that they can’t meet him due to the
COVID-19 but didn’t try to tell him the depth of the pandemic.

“But we try to
keep it as simple as possible, we don’t really have the time to go into the
pandemic hugely – it just doesn’t feel real does it? When he can actually have
the face-to-face contact that will be the opportunity to actually try to explain
to him what has happened”, added Smith.

Flavill was visited by his mother
on his 19th birthday in December last year. However, she had to
remain far from him due to social distancing and in full PPE which made her
even sadder as she waited for months to visit him, reported The Guardian.

The teenager tested COVID-19 positive twice during his recovery but
also recovered both the times. He was earlier admitted at Leicester General hospital but
now has been shifted to Adderley Green care centre in Stoke-on-Trent for his
treatment. He even began moving his limbs, legs.

Flavill is also interacting
with family and friends by blinking and smiling and his first smiles left his
family teary-eyed.

Smith told, “We’ve still got a long journey ahead, but the steps he’s
made in the last three weeks have been absolutely incredible,” as per The
Guardian.

They have also raised over £30,000 under Joseph’s Journey
campaign to support the 19-year-old kid in his long-term recovery.

Flavill, who belong to Tutbury, Staffordshire, was a sporty and active
teenager prior the accident and was also left to get his gold Duke of Edinburgh
award in May.
