At least one person was left grievously injured and two went missing after an explosion rocked a garage of a building in Bordeaux city of France on Saturday, AFP reported citing fire fighters operators on ground.

According to
fire fighters, nine other people have suffered minor injuries following the
blast, while the one seriously injured was identified as an 89-year-old.

“We are worried that the number of victims will rise and that neighbouring
buildings and those further away could have suffered damage and weakening and may collapse,” a
spokesman for the firefighters said.

The two people missing are the garage mechanic and his partner.

As far as the cause of the accident is concerned, the initial investigations suggest that gas leakage was the cause of the explosion and it destroyed the building as well as two neighbouring ones, prompting around 50 firefighters to rush to the scene.

However, confirming that it is still to be ascertained whether gas network caused the explosion or canisters, Eric Destarac, a spokesman for gas distribution company Regaz said that the gas supplies to the district have been cut.

Rescue operation are underway and more details awaited.
