Linn County, Oregon hit by 4.4 magnitude earthquake

An earthquake that was recorded to have a magnitude of 4.4 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) hit near Lacomb, Linn County in Oregon. Numerous local residents felt the rumble and reported the same to the USGS.

A short while after 5:50 AM local time on Friday, the USGS recorded the earthquake’s magnitude and reported that it was coming from a depth of 14.3 kilometres. Sweet Home, Oregon reportedly recorded three more minor quakes (with magnitudes between 1.0 and 1.5) in the past 24 hours.

The USGS later sent out a post on Twitter, where it revealed that the earthquake did not prompt an SMS alert since such an alert is only activated if an earthquake is recorded to have a magnitude of 4.5 or higher. The earthquake on Friday did not result in any damage or loss of life.

The Twitter post states, “At M 4.4, the earthquake was just below the threshold for cell phone alerts to be delivered. As you can see in the graphic below, these will be delivered at M 4.5 and larger. We know many of you felt shaking and we hope you took a protective action like Drop, Cover, and Hold On.” Check out the post and the graph right here:

The Oregon earthquake is not the only earthquake that has occurred today. Another minor earthquake was recorded near Lisbon, New Hampshire on Friday morning. It had a magnitude of 1.7. This comes after a similar earthquake on August 5, when the magnitude was reported to be 2.3.

The earthquake comes right after Hurricane Ian, which dealt severe damage to many areas in the state of Florida. Another earthquake had recently struck Mexico City on September 19, recording a 7.6 magnitude and resulting in the death of two people, besides damaging numerous structures.
