Philip J. Buyno, a 73-year-old man from Prophetstown, Illinois, was recently sentenced to five years in prison after an incident involving a planned abortion clinic. The ruling was delivered by U.S. District Judge Colin S. Bruce, who also mandated three years of supervised release and ordered Buyno to pay $327,547 in restitution. This sentence came after Buyno pleaded guilty to attempting to use fire to damage a building used in interstate commerce.

The incident occurred on May 20, when Buyno drove his car into the front entrance of a commercial building in Danville, intending to burn it down before it could serve as a reproductive health clinic. Police discovered Buyno stuck inside the car, which he had backed into the building’s entrance.

A search of the vehicle revealed several containers filled with gasoline, a hatchet, road flares, old tires, and a pack of matches. Furthermore, Buyno had fortified the trunk of his car with wooden beams, indicating premeditation in his attempt to commit arson.
