As former Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksha fled from the country amidst rising protests in July 2022, he moved to the Maldives with the help of a military plane. From the Island nation, Rajapaksha once again moved to Singapore, amidst rising political pressure on the Maldives from other countries and the Sri Lankan diaspora living in the nation.

It was earlier reported that Rajapaksha would be leaving for either the United Arab Emirates (UAE) or Singapore from the Maldives. As a result, the former Sri Lanka Prime Minister and President decided to flee to Singapore.

Sri Lanka was facing months of financial and political instability in 2022 and all of it came crashing down when demonstrators broke into the Presidential Palace in Colombo in July. The protesters demanded the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksha and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, both of whom have since left their positions.

However, while Gotabaya Rajapaksha fled the country amidst widespread protests in July 2022, Ranil Wickremesinghe has since left his role as the Prime Minister and has replaced the former as the President of the Island nation.

Official sources from Sri Lanka have since reported that former President Gotabaya Rajapaksha might return to the country. Bandula Gunawardena, the politician who revealed Rajapaksha’s potential return, also said that the date of the former President’s return is unknown.

Gotabaya Rajapaksha tendered his resignation when he reached Singapore in late July. According to several reports, the 73-year-old did not resign when he left his home country because it would provide him immunity from arrest in the island country.

Meanwhile, Singapore later revealed that Gotabaya Rajapaksha did not apply for political asylum in the country. The Sri Lankan politician was granted a visa of 14 days, which was later extended by another fortnight.

Gotabaya Rajapaksha is yet to make any revelations regarding his return to Sri Lanka.
